Arbutin. Extracted from the Bearberry plant
commonly located in North American forests;
Arbutin is a natural skin whitening agent that
functions by inhibiting the body’s production of tyrosinase, an enzyme that catalyzes the
production of melanin via oxidization. By preventing this chemical process from occurring in the skin, Arbutin helps relieve hyperpigmentation.
There are two forms of Arbutin: Beta (β) Arbutin and Alpha (α) Arbutin. Although both types of
Arbutin are tyrosinase inhibitors and skin
whitening agents, Alpha (α) Arbutin is more stable and effective. Alpha Arbutin is an α glucoside, while Beta Arbutin is a β glucoside. The glucosidic bond offers much higher stability and efficiency that the β version. This results in a faster, more efficient action on the blocking of tyrosinase enzymes.
